A small gesture at the final Bundeena 35C regular season match against the Barden Ridgebacks has been returned with a big thank you.
15th August 2007 To Steven Hemsley (President Bundeena-Mainbar Soccer Club) We would like to thank your club and in particular your 035C team for the great display of sportsmanship last Sunday 12th August at the Ridge. Our club has a gentleman in the club by the name of John Flynn. John is a very special man who despite some limited intellectual disability is always up at our fields cooking the BBQ or generally helping out. It was his dream to throw on the Ridgebacks uniform, Lace up a pair of boots and take part in a match at The Ridge. With the obvious rules, liability issues we decided to ask your O35C team if we could have John lead our team onto the field, toss the coin, kick off and then be immediately substituted from the field. To their credit, your lads were more than happy to oblige and even joined in with the crowd on hand to clap John after his kickoff and when he left the field. For the record, the smile on Johns face as he left the filed after 10 seconds and then happily stayed on the bench for the rest of the match was priceless and will remain one of my fondest memories of the 2007 soccer season.
